Automotive
From concept and manufacture to global supply and service, our glass technology spans the full vehicle lifecycle. Our Original Equipment (OE) products are used in everything from electric passenger cars to heavy commercial vehicles, while our Aftermarket Glass Replacement (AGR) offering is trusted by repair professionals worldwide. Guided by deep industry knowledge and continuous innovation, we contribute to the development of safer, smarter, and more sustainable vehicles.
Creative Technology
We specialise in innovative glass-based products that sit beyond conventional construction and automotive applications. Combining glass, digital technology, and advanced materials, we use creativity and technical expertise to develop distinctive and pioneering products such as glass cord, ultra-thin micro lenses, METASHINE® and more, supporting a wide range of industries and shaping the future of glass.
History Timeline
1918
America Japan Sheet Glass Co., Ltd. was established in Osaka Japan on November 22 1918, with the first operational plant in Japan (Futajima) firing up shortly after in August 1920.
1931
Company name is changed to Nippon Sheet Glass Co Ltd (now known as ‘NSG Group’)
1950
Nippon Sheet Glass Co Ltd company shares are listed in Tokyo and other stock exchanges in Japan in 1950
1965
Float glass production commenced first in Asia with technology licensed from Pilkington – Pilkington’s float process was announced to the glass-making world in 1959
1972
Rapid development of a number of new glass technologies, including GLASFLAKE™, REFLITE™, and later in the decade, Glasscord for timing belts and Ultra Fine Flat Glass (UFF™).
2006
Acquisition of Pilkington plc, with Pilkington officially becoming a subsidiary of NSG Group on June 16th. At the time of the acquisition, Pilkington owned or was invested in 38 float glass furnaces in Europe, North America, China and Oceania. Combined with NSG’s seven float furnaces in Japan and Southeast Asia, NSG Group became one of the leading global flat glass makers with a worldwide presence.
2018
Automotive team achieves the world’s first Augmented Reality Heads Up Display (AR HUD) – Launched on the Mercedes S-class
2024
Pilkington Mirai™ glass is independently verified as having 52% less embodied carbon, certifying it as the lowest carbon glass of its kind, and a huge milestone in our move towards a more sustainable future.
